Our Happy Halloween

In this town (we call home) we celebrate Halloween on the last Friday of October.

I've heard lots of different reasons why but i don't know the real reason, but either way it means we get to celebrate twice in the crafty household.

I have been feeling off lately, wither its the migraines draining me or my depression is just dragging me down but i feel like i have lost my spark. Family have noticed it more because of Halloween. This is MY holiday ... but this year i hadn't decorated or made anything special. I just didn't have it in me.

I spoke to my gran and it made me realise that i was looking at it the wrong way. Yeah i didn't feel my up beat spooky self - but maybe if i tried it would come to me.

So i broke my no spend for a day and bought £5.00 worth of decorations. It wasn't much but added to my other decorations I've had for years, it made a nice little haunted living room for Agent M to come home to.

I knew Agent M would want to go trick or treating and i figured afterwards we could have a movie night. I have loads of DVD's and Blu-rays that would be perfect to Halloween - Hotel Transylvania, Frankenweenie, Coraline etc.

I set up the table for the night - Lots of sweets and snacks. I normally don't allow this much sugar and junk food over the space of a couple of months, let alone in one night but its Halloween and its a special treat.

Every movie night needs a share bag and some juice right? Well this bottle of apple, mango and passion fruit juice was perfect last night - Though it was a bit pricey (£2.50 a bottle from M&S) it was delicious and we got a tumbler each to enjoy.

So much junk food - our dentist would be cussing me out ... Yet I'm happy to report all that was eaten last night were a few Jaffa Cake bars, a lolly and a donut. Agent M isn't really one for lot of sweets lol.

We ended up not going trick or treating as we got engrossed in the movies - Scared Shrekless and Wallace and Gromit & the curse of the Were-Rabbit. It wasnt a problem to Agent M though as i had gave him a pumpkin bucket full of goodies already.

I'm glad i decided to decorate and make a special night for us cause Agent M loved it and at the end of the day we made some great memories :)

Spaghetti Spiders

Agent M has an obsession for this meal we call Spaghetti spiders. Its a simple meal in that it has 3 ingredients but its not cheap to make so we only have it once in a while.

You'll Need
Mattessons smoked sausage (1 sausage per 2 servings)
Dry Spaghetti
Primula cheese (We used the one with chives)

To Make
Put a large pot of boiling water on the hob on a medium heat. Add a little salt.

Slice up the sausage into chunks. This will be the body of the spiders. I like to make them quite thick but you can make them smaller if you like. If they are smaller, you can make more spiders.

Snap some dry spaghetti in half and thread 4 of the stems through the sausage. This will be the legs.

Add the spiders to the pot of boiling water and any remaining spaghetti. Add more of the spaghetti to the pot (enough for the number of servings required).

Once cooked remove the spiders and set to the side.

Mix the primula cheese in with the remaining spaghetti.

Plate up the cheesy spaghetti and top with the sausage spiders.

Serve and enjoy.

Weigh in - Week 28

Let me preface this by saving i have comfort ate a lot recently.

Yes i know its not good and i am kind of undoing all my previous hard work but at the time when i am stressed out, the hard work doesn't come into it. I really need to come up with a better way to cope with my anxiety and stress i know but right now, this is a better option for me than starting smoking again.

That said i have only put on a pound this month which when i think about the take out, birthday cake, ice-cream and chocolate i have ate this month, I'm actually happy with the pound increase. I was fully expecting to have put on at least half a stone ... I'm gonna accept this. Not as a victory as I'm really messing up here and I'm owning up to it but as a "It could have been worse - maybe wanna fix this before i undo all my previous loss".

I've been thinking about going to the Slimming world meetings as a motivation to keep going. Plus everyone keeps saying how its easier to lose weight by going to the meetings. But i just cant afford to waste the money each week getting weighed when i prefer to weigh myself monthly anyway. I cant justify it.

I'll need to do something to get my mojo back, If not i can see me being back up at 19st by Christmas and it will all have been for nothing :(

Crafty Mama Makes

Helen of Troy was the face that launched a thousand ships ... Well good on her. Me on the other hand, I'm the mama that launched a single Etsy store.

That's right ladles and jellyspoons, i have finally took my shop off Holiday mode and have listed some planner stickers that i have created.

I'm not expecting that I'm going to become a millionaire but I'm hoping that i can make it into a profitable little business that will help pay for Agent M's swimming lessons, Maybe even help with Christmas ... or even better ... get me that much closer to becoming debt free.

I enjoy making the stickers and use them all the time in my own planners so i thought i would give others the chance to enjoy them too :)

You can find my store here and I've set up an additional Instagram account just for my store (though you can find my everyday snaps here.

I've listed a few sets online and will be adding more over the next few weeks.

I hope you like them - You can click on the images below to go straight to that listing :)

*Update - The "Bad Day" image is rejecting the link so you can find that listing here*

Last year of my 20s

I'm not nor have i every really thought of myself as being "young". I didn't have a rebellious teenage stage and have pretty much lived independently from my early teens.

Although the first 25 years of my life had been, shall i say complicated, Its not something that i dwell on. I don't see the point as its not going to change anything. If anything, i am somewhat grateful now for my hardships - I know i can survive and there is nothing more empowering than that!

But as i enter the last year of my 20's, i wonder what i want to take into this next chapter of my life.

30 is a big deal for me. Many women i went to school with are terrified of the big three zero but i am looking forward to it. For me its like the end of this chapter of life. I don't know why but being 30 seems like the age you really become an adult.

I'm interested to see how i would be as a more 'adultier-adult'. In my head i can completely imagine waking up on October 12th 2017 and just know about mortgage interest rates and political stances. My hair might change overnight into a "mum" hairstyle and i can automatically balance a budget, while folding washing and simultaneously make school lunches.

In reality, it's probably just another day but to me its a goal. And i need that.

So I'm setting myself little goals for my last year of my 20's. There are loads of lists of things to do before your 30's but this little list of my goals is important to me and what i would like to achieve.

Start my own profitable business - I would like to have a way to generate an income from a hobby, be it blogging or crafting, i would like to turn my hobby into a profitable in-devour. I've seen many people do it so would love to mange it myself.

Learn to drive - This one is big for me as I've been wanting to learn for a while but it just costs so much money. I have always had other expenses that i needed to use any extra cash for so spending £30+ on an hour lesson just seemed too extreme. But i want to learn!

Have my own crafting space - Right now i blog on my bed as its the easiest spot, i craft at the dining room table or on the floor, i knit in bed and i stitch on the sofa. I don't have a specific crafty space and i really want one. Be it my own little room or even a space with a nice desk in the corner of my room. Whatever it is, i need one as I'm fed up having to look through boxes to find my crafty stash.

Redecorate my house - My lovely little house is in desperate need of a make over. Not that its nasty looking or that its trashed, but I've had the same wallpaper for 16+ years in most rooms and my hall carpet has seen better days. I want to give it a fresh lick of paint and make it look and pretty again.

Hit 1000 all round - My blog is important to me and although i have been unable to keep up as much as i would like in the past month or two i want to remedy this. I want to create a successful blog and in doing so hit 1000 all round - All round being social media followers and daily page views. I don't know why but 1000 just feels like a good number. I know some blogger friends who have triple this daily and i know of some who have 10 times this but for me - 1k is the magic number!

As well as my desire to get debt free by my 30's its an achievable list i think ... Here's hoping i can get full marks :)

Make It Monday #34

Hey lovely's ... Welcome to my linky!

Its been a mad week here in the crafty house. I have had a birthday and am now officially in the last year of my 20's and between migraines (for which the medication makes me fall asleep) i have been trying to keep Agent M amused over the October break. Its been a strange week. Because of the lapses in time (thanks medication) its gone in soooo fast. I kind of feel robbed but thankfully the migraines are reducing so I'll riding the wave as it were.

Anyways, onto the linky!

Handmade Cards

I love handmade cards and gifts.

I love that they can be personalised to the recipient and that you can put love into what you make.

Although its early, i decided to get a jump on my Christmas cards this year.

Making your own cards doesn't have to be difficult, in fact sometimes the most simple cards are the most beautiful.

I made a collection that look amazing and once you get into the swing of things, can be created in a single afternoon.

Making the cards is really easy. I used paper and toppers from the Buzz Craft - The Magic of Christmas Collection to make 8 separate cards (2 in each style).
  • I applied glue to the card blank and placed the card stock on the glued card. I then used a craft knife to cut away the excess paper. Keep the remaining paper as you will need it for the other card.
  • Pop the die cut images out of the card and attach the foam squares to the back of the largest image. Place where-ever you wish on the card. Attach more foam squares onto the second image and place directly above the first.

Its honestly as simple as that. You can add an additional image if you wish, applying the same as before.

I used white card blanks from HunkyDoryCrafts, which came with envelopes, and 3D Foam Squares from DoCrafts.

Below are my finished designs.

These card use the "Snow is falling" sheets. The backing paper has a Scandinavian feel to it and the penguin and snowmen work well with the paper.

These card use the "Ho Ho Ho" sheets. I love the snowflakes design on these and the Santa toppers really 'pop' against the bright red.

These card use the "Star Gazing" sheets. The subtle polka dot paper lets the toppers take the focal point. The pale blue ties in with the pale blue behind the reindeer and bird house.

These card use the "Christmas Friends" sheets. These ones are my favourite as the white snowflakes stand out really well against the deep blue background. The circular toppers are a lot lighter so they really contrast well with the paper.

There are loads of card stock and matching toppers you can chose from - Many companies stocking complete kits with everything you need to make your own Christmas cards.

My Sunday photo - 9/10/16

It's been a sleepy weekend.

I've been given painkillers for these headaches/migraines (still working out which is which) and they are making me soooo sleepy. It's been hard keeping my eyes open and Agent D decided today to take Agent M out while I was snoring my head off of the sofa. I woke up to some pictures of the two of them bowling and although it's nice to see my Agents having "boy time", I kinda wish I could have joined them.

These headaches are driving me insane. I've not been able to look at my laptop or phone much and have to watch TV on low volume with tinted glasses on.

I hope the medication doesn't keep making me sleep though as I have so much i wanna do this coming week with Agent M being on holiday from school.

Hot Dog Mummies

I'm sure its obvious by now that i love October ... More specifically Halloween. I tend to drag it out like Christmas ... All month long.

One way i like to get spooky is by making some terrifying treats for dinner ... Like these Hot Dog Mummies.

Although they are a little fidgety to make they are worth it and trust me, the kids will be thrilled! You can serve with "Freaky Fries" and its a spooky dinner for your little Ghosts and Ghouls.

You'll Need
Large Hot dog sausages
croissant dough
mustard

To make
Pre-heat the oven to 180C

Drain the hot dogs and lay on a chopping board.

Slice the bottom of the hot dog vertically 1/3 of the way up. This will be the legs.

Slice into the hot dog where the arms would be. Make sure you DON'T CUT THE ARMS OFF! you will need these to wrap the dough around.

Set the hot dogs to the side and open the croissant dough. Unroll it and cut into strips.

Start to wrap the dough around your hot dogs. Make sure you wrap each arm and leg individually

Place on a oven tray with grease-proof paper and cook in the oven for about 10 minutes (or until the dough starts to brown.

Using the mustard place little dots where the eyes would be and serve.

No Spend October

Since I've decided to start working towards debt free 30's ... I've been looking at ways to both make and save money. I'm terrible when we go into town for buying a coffee or if Agent M wants something like a sweetie, i'll just buy it. But at the end of the month i'm scrimping to pay of things and i hate it.

I don't have that big an income and the disposable portion is tear worthy, so i really shouldn't be wasting money. That's why i'm going to have a no spend month.
I'm trying to reduce my food waste too.

Last night i made pulled pork and although it might annoy Agent M having the same meal twice, I'm going to use the last of it up tonight, meaning i'm saving not having to cook a whole new meal and i'm using up leftovers so i'm getting more value out of the pork joint.

The premise of a no spend month is simple ... DON'T SPEND MONEY!

There are exceptions to the rule

  • Food (groceries not take-away's)
  • Bills, Rent, Utilities
  • Travel (though walking where possible)
  • Agent M's Swimming - I have block booked lessons but still have to pay the admission to the leisure centre every Saturday.
  • My Disney Swap buddy - Thats a commintment that i have agreed to and i'm not backing out of it.
Other than that, i need to put my purse under lock and key - and with any luck i can put away my target of £100 this month.

My Sunday Photo - 2/10/16

It pretty much sums up my day. I'm on the couch, with a cuppa, some pain killers, still nursing my headache and trying a square or two of this new Dairy Milk medly i found at Home Bargains the other day (49p bargain).

October Disney Craft Swap

Mea culpa everyone.

I am a bit behind this week thanks to what can only be described as the headache from hell. I'm actually sat typing this with the lowest screen brightness and sunglasses on just so i can get it done. If that isn't devotion to Disney then i don't know what is.

Anyway its October which in my option is the best month of the year and should be celebrated with the spookiness and trickery it deserves  ... Which is why this months theme is Villains.

Because of my delay I'm keeping the swap open an extra day so it will close on the 6th and you will get your buddy on the 7th. The sign up form can be found here.

Please download the questions and send me your answers. My email is craftymama087@gmail.com. Please have the subject line "October Disney Swap"

There are a few rules that I've made so that everyone knows whats what.
  • The swap is open internationally.
  • Sign up is the 1st of every month and will close midnight (GMT) on the 5th of the month. You should have your swap buddy info on the 6th. See this months amendment above
  • You need to check in on Instagram between the 13th and the 15th. You can show us what your making or do a close-up if your wanting to keep it a surprise for your buddy, but I'd like to see that everyone is taking part and on track. Please tag me @justacraftymama and #CraftyMamaDisneySwap so i can mark you off. If you wish you can DM me instead.
  • All parcels must be sent by the 25th of the month. Proof of postage is advisable but that's totally your call. I ask that you let me know when your parcel has been sent and when you have received your parcel. I'm keeping track of this :)
  • Its your call what you make - If your savvy with a sewing machine or nifty with a knitting needle, even if you have a penchant for paper crafts ... There are no restrictions on how/what you make so long as it fits with that months theme.
  • In the spirit of fairness all parcels must have at least 1 crafty make and 2 gift items with a minimum total value £5. By all means if you want to make/gift more then go ahead but the minimum is there so that everyone knows what to expect and no-one gets short changed.

I have made a PDF of the rules and dates which can be found here … you can save it on your phone, tablet or computer/laptop and have it to have whenever you need.

I've noted that some of the International parcels are taking up to 3 weeks to arrive, please keep this in mind if sending international. Its great that we are making swaps across the pond and so far the wait has been worth it for many of you.
